Up and Coming...

The head for my Dio de los Muertos rod puppet!

Anansi the Spider
Shadow Puppets

I created a rendition of the traditional Ashanti
African folk tale of "Anansi and his Six Sons."

It was performed to a slightly longer than 3 minute
voice track retelling of the story (me with a pretend
African accent haha), with Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Special thanks to Kevin for helping me perform and Vika for
helping me photograph these difficult to capture shadows.

3 of Anansi's 6 sons:
See Trouble, Road Builder, River Drinker.

The other 3:
Game Skinner, Stone Thrower, Cushion.

An interpretive representation of Nyame,
God of All Things.

Fish, who ate Anansi,
along with his skinned counterpart.
My absolute favorite part of the performance.

Falcon, who flew away with Anansi in his beak.

Spider family on the web.

Acting out the trial scene from
Arthur Miller's "The Crucible".
Object sounds only.

SHADOW PUPPETS

In-class shadow test puppet.

In-class shadow test puppet.

Jointed shadow puppet.
To be performed from behind a shadow screen.
Based on the verb "dance."

Testing it out with a LED spotlight.
It will be performed from behind a shadow screen.
Haven't picked out the music yet,
but it will probably be something saucy.

"It Don't Mean a Thing (If You Ain't Got That Swing)"

Still not finished though.

Here are the rest of the dolls, sewn and stuffed, ready for stitching.

Nigel has a body! (no eyeballs yet) His hands are not yet attached since I am presently sewing his clothes. Since I took the photo, developments have been made in the pants department. Hopefully, he will soon be fully garbed.

Rötchen. The first of my Grimm dolls, sans face.
Updates to come :)

P.S. If you're in the Union Square area near Parson's New School for Design, please please go check out the Brother's Quay "Dormitorium" exhibit in the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center!

If you like the Brothers Quay, you may like the stop motion works of Jan Svankmajer. He is the inspiration for much of their work and does some brilliant animation.

"Darkness Light Darkness"

"Alice"
...one of my favorite renditions of Alice in Wonderland. Fantastic, even though the lips get a little old.
